What is a Domain Name
The term ‘domain name' is very popular in this modern era, more accurately in this Internet era. The term domain name has multiple meanings. Firstly the ‘domain name' is that which is entered into a computer as a part of the URL i.e. of a website or as an email address, then it connected to the global domain name system (in short DNS) and this will inform the computer to the IP address by the assigned name i.e. Domain Name. In other meaning of the domain name is that the product, which provide to the customers. Sometimes a domain name is a name, which looked up in the global Domain name system i.e. DNS for different purposes.
Domain name is the hostname of the computer connected to the Internet, which provide the names to stand in for IP addresses. The domain names are responsible for allowing for any services to move into different location of the Internet, which has different IP address. Every words that is the string of letters, hyphens or digit between the dots is known as ‘label' in the domain name system. There are some rules for a valid label. Generally labels must be started with a letter and end with either letter or digit and the intervening characters must be letter or digit or hyphens. The labels must be of 1 to 63 characters long. The domain name must not be entirely numeric. The fully qualified domain names sometimes end with a final dot.
For easily communicate with the websites and also other server based services, the domain names should be of unique alphabetical address instead of numeric ones. By the use of domain name system, one server may perform multiple roles, which is hosting multiple independent websites. With the increasing use of Internet i.e. with the explosion of internet the more and more websites have been created that is why there are far more websites than the servers.
For accommodate this large no's of websites, the hypertext transfer protocol (http) tells the server about the website name is being used by the client. By this way, one server can provide different sites for different domain names.
Now for illustration of the difference between a uniform Resource Locator (in short it is known as URL) and a domain name, the following is given herewith. URL: http://www.abc.com/ Here in the above example the domain name is: abc.com
Every domain name ends with a first level domain name. The first level domain name, which is also called as a top-level domain name, is a three or more characters generic name. The top-level domain name in the above example is ‘. com'. besides top-level domain name there are other level domains which are second level domain names also in the domain name.
The second level domain name is the left portion of the top-level domain i.e. the left portion of the .com or other extension i.e. the top-level domain. The next higher-level domain is the third-level domain. The third-level domain is the domains immediately left of the second-level domain. For complete understanding about these domains the following example is given here. In the domain “en.anc.org”, ‘abc' is the second level domain and ‘en' is the third level domain. The third or higher level domains are also known as sub-domains.
The dot (.) alone is designated as the zeroth-level domain. The domain name has its own significance. As it has the technical importance for which it has been created but also the domain names has become very attractive to the marketers too. As the domains are originally planned in such a way that the structure of domains are followed a very impressive hierarchy in which the top-level domains represent the organization i.e. by seeing the top-level domain, we can understand about the organization whether it is governmental organization or a commercial organization or any other organization.
The domain structures are nested in such a way that in the complete address, all the branches, departments, any other subsidiary of the parent organization could be expressed. People are free to select an unallocated domain name within a particular top-level domain name. The system of allocation of domain name within a particular top-level domain name is being done as per first come first basis. Sometimes it may also lead to the use of a inaccurate and misleading domain names for the generic domain name. To avoid such problems recently some steps has been taken today. Now it is also found that the unconventional domain names are gaining popularity.
The unconventional domain names sometimes used to create some unconventional email address. Some domain names are very popular among the masses. Since the last decade, some domain names especially those related to the business, photography or any other commercial field of digital trade, have a higher demand to the corporate world due to the high capability of these names to attract the clients. During this Internet era, some domain names are earning millions of dollars per month for advertisement or selling products throughout the world. The effective domain names by their popularity among the masses draw the large no's of visitors into the websites and are very helpful to sell the products or do the advertisement of the product. That is why it helps to earn lots of money. For starting a business, which will be handled digitally, the first thing is that one must have to select a good domain name.
Of course, the domain name should be exactly be fitted with the business. Selection of domain name is very important for making a good profit from the business being done digitally. If one wish to sell some product, he must choose the domain name which highly be fitted with his business, otherwise the visitors when visit the website don't stay more time as it was not the actual thing he was searching for. That is why the domain name is the most important thing in the dot-com era.
